Shift Operations Assistant

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Shift Operations Assistant will provide essential operational and logistical support across campus facilities, ensuring the smooth execution of events, routine maintenance, and day-to-day service delivery. The Shift Operations Assistant plays a key role in event setup, grounds care, furniture and equipment handling, and supporting technical and trades staff. This position contributes to a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for the campus community through responsive, hands-on assistance and flexible service delivery.
Responsibilities:
Event
Setup and Support
Coordinate and carry out the setup and takedown of furniture and equipment for
campus events, including tables, chairs, stages, and steel-framed canopies,
ensuring timely and accurate configurations to meet event requirements.
Audio-Visual
Equipment Operation
Set up and operate basic audio-visual equipment such as sound systems and
projector screens to support presentations, events, and meetings.
Grounds
and Seasonal Maintenance
Assist with groundskeeping duties, including snow and ice removal, lawn care,
general landscaping, and maintenance of interior plant displays, contributing
to a safe and well-maintained campus environment.
Operation
of Grounds Equipment
Operate lawn care and snow removal equipment as needed. Prior experience with
such equipment is preferred.
Support
to Technical and Trades Staff
Provide general support to Maintenance Generalists, Electricians, and external
contractors or vendors, assisting in routine maintenance and repair activities
across campus facilities.
Furniture
and Equipment Moves
Assist in the relocation, assembly, and installation of office furniture and
equipment as directed.
Mailroom
and Delivery Support
Provide backup support for mail services, including assisting with deliveries
and offering coverage during staff absences or high-volume periods.
Administrative
and Miscellaneous Support
Perform additional duties as assigned to support facilities operations, which
may include basic administrative tasks and ad hoc operational needs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Physically fit, able to lift 20-50lbs regularly.
- Numeracy, written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic hand tools, dollies, moving equipment.
- Time management and planning skills with little supervision.
- Reliable and independent.
- Knowledge in electronics, sounds systems etc.
- Safe operation of snow removal and lawn equipment.
- Strong people skills.
- Committed to providing support whenever necessary.
Qualifications:
- Highschool diplomas is preferred.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License required for operating University vehicles with a clean drivers’ abstract is required.
- Ability to pass a clear criminal record check is required.
Working Conditions:
- Weekend and after-hours work may be required.
- Often required to work outside.
- Exposure to dust, wind and extreme temperatures.
- Physically demanding.
- Lifting/carrying: Regularly, 10kg (20-50lbs).
- Pushing/Pulling: Regularly, distributing materials.
- Climbing: Regularly, stairs and ladders.
- Reaching: Regularly, both high and low, awkward angle/position.
- Walking, continuously.
- Campus is large, (14.1 acres) and contains 12 buildings.
- There are two adjacent house properties and one remote, (2.5 km) campus.
- Current total gross floor area on the main campus is approx. 37 000 m 2 (390,000 ft 2) with an underground parkade.
- Must undergo online training in basic safety and msds as provided by the Alberta Construction Safety Association.
- Must have CSA rated boots.
